What this is
Snow Monkey Guide is the Japan Onsen Society’s guide to Jigokudani Monkey Park and the onsen towns around it — Yudanaka, Shibu, and the Nagano valleys that hold them. Nineteen guides, one destination, covered completely.
Accredited by the Japan Onsen Society
Snow Monkey Guide is part of the Japan Onsen Society registry and carries the Society-approved mark. The Society is the accrediting body. Each guide in the registry is independently accountable to a single published standard, and Snow Monkey Guide is held to it like any other.
Destinations are selected. A destination joins the registry only when the overnight stay is essential to the experience, a living ryokan culture is present, and English-speaking travellers are meaningfully underserved by what already exists. Jigokudani qualifies on all three.
The standard we’re held to
Independent. We are not a tour operator. We do not sell tickets. Our only job is to help you plan a good visit.
Verified, or omitted. Every route, timing, cost, and accommodation note comes from direct research — official transport and municipal sources, onsen-association data, and primary Japanese references. We cite the source for facts that expire, and we tell you to confirm them before you travel. What we cannot stand behind, we leave out or flag.
Firsthand where it counts. What a place actually feels like — the walk, the baths, the experience of staying the night — comes from real visits, not from rewriting other blogs.
Honesty over hype. We will tell you when something isn’t worth it, when a tour is unnecessary, and when the season is working against you. Our value is trust, not traffic.
Corrections. Travel details change. If something here is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

Why this exists
Most English-language coverage of the snow monkeys is a paragraph inside a wider Japan itinerary — enough to make someone want to go, nowhere near enough to get them there. The questions that decide a trip get a sentence or nothing at all: which month, which bus, how long the walk is, whether the monkeys will be in the water when you arrive.
This site answers them properly. Verifying against Japanese primary sources is the part most coverage skips. It is the whole point of this one.
