How Long Do You Need at Snow Monkey Park?

The Short Answer

Most visitors spend 2 to 3 hours at Jigokudani Monkey Park. That's enough time to walk the trail, watch the monkeys bathe, and take photos without feeling rushed.

The Trail

The walk from the Kanbayashi Onsen bus stop to the park entrance takes about 30 minutes each way through a forested mountain path. The trail is straightforward but can be icy in winter — wear proper footwear.

Time at the Park

Once inside, most visitors stay 45 minutes to 1 hour. The monkeys are wild and move freely, so sightings are never guaranteed — but in winter, the hot spring pool draws them reliably. Arrive early in the morning for the best chance of seeing large numbers bathing.

Day Trip vs Overnight

You can do Snow Monkey Park as a day trip from Tokyo or Nagano, but staying overnight in nearby Shibu Onsen or Yudanaka Onsen adds a completely different experience. You can visit the park at quieter times — early morning before the day-trip crowds arrive — and soak in the same type of hot springs the monkeys enjoy.

Recommended Time Budget

  • Half day (3–4 hours total): Trail + park visit, then continue to next destination

  • Full day: Park visit + explore Yudanaka or Shibu Onsen village

  • Overnight: Best experience — early morning park visit with no crowds
