Start at Nagano Station
Nagano Station is the gateway. The Hokuriku Shinkansen and long-distance trains arrive here, and both routes to the park begin at the East (Zenko-ji) Exit. The Nagano Dentetsu line runs from the platform below the station; the express bus leaves from the terminal just outside the East Exit.

Option B — The Train to Yudanaka (year-round)
The Nagano Dentetsu (Nagaden) line runs all year from Nagano to Yudanaka, the last stop, in roughly 45 to 70 minutes. Limited express trains are fastest; local trains are cheaper and frequent. Note that the JR Pass is not valid on the Nagaden line — buy a ticket or pay at the gate.

Yudanaka to the Trailhead
From Yudanaka Station a local bus or short taxi covers the final 10 to 15 minutes to the Kanbayashi trailhead. Buses are loosely timed to train arrivals; taxis wait outside the station. From the trailhead it is a 1.6 km (~1 mi) forest walk to the park entrance.

Timing Your Arrival
Aim to be on the trail for the park’s morning opening. Cold overnight air brings the monkeys to the hot spring early, the steam and light are best, and the midday tour crowds have not yet arrived. Build in slack for the Yudanaka transfer, especially in winter when snow can delay buses.

The Return — and Why to Stay Over
Check the last bus and train times before you set out — the final departures from Yudanaka run earlier than most visitors expect, and missing them in winter is a real risk. Better still, stay the night in Shibu or Yudanaka Onsen: sleep minutes from the trailhead, walk in at opening, and trade the schedule anxiety for an evening of bathhouses and kaiseki.
